July 2025

Introduction

It’s been a busy and rewarding month across our group, with our training teams working in a wide variety of environments – from turbine halls to harbours – to deliver courses that make a real impact. We’ve seen teams building skills and confidence in everything from working at height and confined space entry to overhead crane operation and internal verification. This month also saw us complete large-scale training projects, such as delivering Overhead Gantry Crane training in MacDuff for over 100 delegates – a fantastic opportunity to boost capability on a significant scale.

Alongside our on-the-ground delivery, we’ve been celebrating some incredible learner achievements. Our Modern Apprenticeship successes include individuals like Mathilda Lamprecht and Michael MacLennan, who have shown dedication, resilience, and a commitment to continuous improvement. We’ve also seen organisations investing heavily in their people, with Bells Food Group’s Modern Apprenticeship programme continuing to expand, and leadership development sessions making a real difference for teams at both Bells and Gordon & MacPhail.

We’re proud to have maintained our high standards through our successful RTITB Accreditation audit and to have contributed to the #NoWrongPath campaign, sharing our own experiences to inspire the next generation. In this edition, you’ll also find our insight into the human factors that influence working at height safety – exploring why PPE compliance is only one part of the equation and how behavioural safety plays a vital role in keeping people safe.

Finally, we’ve included a detailed service spotlight on our Working at Height training portfolio, as well as upcoming course and webinar dates to help you plan ahead. Whether you’re refreshing existing skills, developing new leaders, or looking to enhance your Competency Management System, our focus remains the same – delivering high-quality, practical learning that helps individuals and organisations perform at their best.

What We Have Been Up To

Training on the Ground (and at Height!)
From turbine halls to harbours, our training teams have been busy.
• Internal Verifier training at Well-Safe Solutions explored assessment processes, support for assessors, and verification procedures.
• Authorised Gas Testing took us up to NRS Dounreay – essential learning for safe working in confined spaces.
•Working at Height training in Kintore focused on building competence, confidence, and safety-first thinking.
• At SSE Peterhead, an overhead crane refresher saw the team using a 145-ton Vaughan crane to guide and place equipment with precision.
• Forklift training at Pocra Quay came with perfect timing – just as the Tall Ships were sailing out of Aberdeen Harbour.
• NPORS experienced worker testing at Miller Plant covered wheeled loading shovels and articulated dump trucks.
• We have recently completed Overhead Gantry Crane training in MacDuff for over 100 delegates – a fantastic opportunity to build capability on a large scale.
Modern Apprenticeship Success
First up, congratulations to Mathilda Lamprecht, who has completed her SVQ in Production and Processing at Aquascot. Not only did she achieve it quickly and to a high standard, she did it all with a smile. Presented with her certificate by Health and Safety Manager Sylwia Robertson, Mathilda’s success is a brilliant example of focus and positivity.
We also celebrated Michael MacLennan, who achieved his Modern Apprenticeship Level 2. Starting the course with some nerves, Michael’s confidence grew with every step – and he’s now making a real impact as Plant Controller at Lunar FPR. His manager calls him “a credit to the company” – we call him proof that self-belief goes a long way.
Investing in the Future Workforce
The Bells Food Group Modern Apprenticeship programme is going from strength to strength. With 14 apprentices currently progressing and another 19 about to start, that’s more than 30 people gaining skills and experience across the business. The enthusiasm and commitment from everyone involved makes the future look very bright indeed.
Building Leaders for Tomorrow
We’ve been working with teams to sharpen leadership skills and strategic thinking.
At Gordon & MacPhail, our latest Leadership Development Programme session focused on strategy and planning. Using tools like McKinsey 7S and PEAR, participants explored how to set clear objectives, assess alignment, and adapt plans as circumstances change. A game theory activity brought it all to life, sparking some brilliant discussions.
Meanwhile at Bells Food Group, another team completed our three-day leadership programme. Over three packed days, they explored personal leadership styles, strengthened communication and coaching skills, and tackled resilience and performance management. Each left with sharper insight and a clear focus on leading with confidence.
Standards & Recognition
We’re proud to have passed our annual RTITB Accreditation audit – a testament to the high standards our team maintains every day.
#NoWrongPath Day
On exam results day, we joined the #NoWrongPath campaign to remind young people that careers aren’t always straight lines. Our team shared their own experiences to show that there’s more than one way to get where you want to be.

Testimonial of the Month

This perfectly captures what we strive for – responsive feedback, flexibility around busy schedules, and a people-first approach that ensures every participant gets the most from their learning experience, so a huge well done to our team for maintaining such high standards and thank you to our learners for sharing their experiences.

Research Insights

Introduction

Working at height remains one of the most dangerous activities across industries. According to the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE), falls from height accounted for 30% of all workplace fatalities in 2022/23 (HSE, 2023), making it the leading cause of fatal injury. While correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential, research shows that human behaviour and decision-making often play a bigger role in preventing – or causing – incidents (IOSH, 2022).

Why incidents still happen despite training and PPE

Studies from the DROPS Forum and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) highlight that workers often take shortcuts due to time pressure, overconfidence, or familiarity with a task (DROPS, 2023; IOSH, 2022). When something feels routine, perceived risk decreases even if the actual danger remains. Peer influence is also significant – if others are skipping steps or using equipment incorrectly, individuals are more likely to follow suit (HSE, 2023).

Decision-making under pressure

Work at height frequently occurs in challenging conditions – such as wind, rain, uneven surfaces, or restricted space – which increase mental load. Cognitive research shows that under these pressures, people rely on “heuristics” or quick mental shortcuts, which can lead to unsafe decisions (HSG48, HSE, 2021). Fatigue, distractions, and production targets can also impair judgement, prompting unsafe choices like bypassing guardrails or omitting secondary retention checks (HSE, 2023).

Why PPE compliance isn’t enough

PPE is the last line of defence, not the first. HSE guidance is clear that the hierarchy of control should start with eliminating or reducing the need to work at height before relying on PPE (HSE, 2024). Without strong hazard awareness, a culture of speaking up, and active supervision, PPE can become a tick-box exercise. A recent HSE review found that over 50% of falls from height incidents involved PPE that was either misused or bypassed (HSE, 2023).

Shaping safer behaviour

Improving safety performance at height means embedding behavioural safety principles alongside technical training. Research shows that compliance improves when workers understand why rules exist, supervisors model correct behaviours, near misses can be reported without blame, and training includes realistic, pressure-based scenarios (IOSH, 2022; HSE, 2023).

The takeaway

Working at height safety isn’t just about harnesses and helmets – it’s about the choices people make before and during the job. Addressing human factors such as risk perception, peer influence, and decision-making is key to closing the gap between knowing what’s safe and actually doing it.
