How Resilient Are Your Leaders?
DO YOUR LEADERS HAVE THE PERSONAL SKILLS AND UNDERSTAND THE HUMAN FACTORS TO COPE WITH UNPREDICTABILITY?
Whatever their level or position, all your people in a leadership role need to be able to respond to the unpredictable aspects of their role.
Building their internal resilience to cope with the unexpected, enables them to thrive in their day-to-day roles and deal better with the routine.
Yet, how many of our leaders have this resilience to cope with the unpredictable, stay focused and make clear and accountable decisions, whatever the situation facing them?

And if we are honest, Covid has made the situation worse for many organisations and their people.
WHAT IS HUMAN RESILIENCE?
Rob Diver, Operations Director, Praesidio, a specialist in resilience, emergency preparedness and response describes human resilience clearly:
“Resilience refers to both the process undertaken, and the outcome of successfully adapting to complex or challenging personal or professional experiences. It’s having the mental, emotional, and personal flexibility and ability to adjust to both internal and external impact factors.
Resilience is what gives people the emotional strength to cope with complex and challenging situations that are likely to affect them emotionally and professionally. Resilient people utilise their experience, strengths, skills, and available resources to deal with the unplanned.”
WHY SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED WITH THE RESILIENCE OF YOUR TEAM?
Resilience matters because in unplanned, challenging situations, people who lack resilience are likely to feel overwhelmed or helpless and this impacts on everything that they then do from that point forward.
However, these do not have to be a life or death situations, and will very often be situations where there is no emergency plan in place to turn to.
They might be situations that your leaders do not feel equipped to deal with, perhaps because it is new to them or perhaps because it was not something they predicted, yet they understand the implications of making the wrong decision.
As a result, they are likely to rely on negative coping mechanisms, perhaps avoiding the problem, isolating themselves and not seeking help or input, or even denying the scale of the problem.
This is when a situation that could have been managed can quickly escalate into one that is a serious issue for your leaders, the team around them and then the wider organisation.
HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW RESILIENT YOUR ORGANISATION AND YOUR LEADERS ARE?
The good news is that you do not need to wait for something to go wrong and be managed inappropriately. You can start now to assess the resilience of your key people.
There are four pillars of resilience:

We do not have space to delve into these now, but you can start to see that resilience can be broken down, you can link competencies to resilience and you can assess the resilience of your people.
Importantly, you can then take action to address any gaps. In our experience, there will be gaps.
WHAT CAN YOU DO IF THERE ARE GAPS IN RESILIENCE?
A clear message to takeaway is that resilience can be taught.
It is not an overnight process but something that needs to developed over time.
However, we can grow an individual’s capacity for resilience.
This matters because your managers need to be able to deal with crisis in their primary role, secondary role, on call role or in their off duty time, and your organisation can provide the support to ensure that they can cope when the time comes.
Of course, there are human factors around developing resilience that will contribute toward building and sustaining resilience in an individual, and any development programme must take this into account.
HOW WE CAN HELP?
Our Developing Resilience ILM Recognised programme, delivered in conjunction with Praesidio, is a great starting point and will help accelerate the process of building resilience.
From here, we can help you develop an organisation wide or individual led/person centred programme that will enable you to move things forward depending on your priorities and constraints.
