March 2025

Introduction

Welcome to this month’s update from Polaris Learning! It’s been a busy and exciting few weeks across a range of programmes, partnerships, and events – and we’re delighted to share some highlights with you. From hands-on leadership development to mentoring, team building, and international training delivery, our work continues to support people and organisations in building capability, confidence, and connection.

We’ve been back in Glasgow delivering Sulmara’s Leadership Development Programme, where participants from diverse roles explored communication, conflict, and team dynamics. We also continued our collaboration with TechnipFMC, supported Sulzer with mentoring training, and enjoyed an energetic team-building day with AquaTerra and Bon Accord. These sessions continue to show the power of practical, reflective learning to bring teams together and unlock potential.

Our global training delivery reached a new milestone, with U.Supervise now being delivered in Spanish for Fugro in Chile – marking the third language for this programme and a proud moment in our long-term partnership. Closer to home, we’ve also been working with Opportunity North East on leadership training in the seafish industry, and Helena represented Polaris Learning at the World Butchers’ Challenge in Paris, supporting Team GB – a truly diverse month of activity!

Finally, don’t miss this month’s featured testimonial, spotlight on leadership development, and a deep dive into why early investment in leadership pays off. Plus, check out upcoming workshops and events – including a communication-focused leadership course in May and a June Lunch & Learn event in Inverurie. There’s plenty to explore, and we hope you find inspiration and ideas to support your own learning journey.

What We Have Been Up To

We were in Glasgow delivering Sulmara’s four-day Leadership Development Programme. With strong attendance and great engagement, participants from both onshore and offshore backgrounds explored key topics including communication, conflict management, team dynamics, and workplace values. The interactive sessions sparked valuable discussions and reflections – a fantastic atmosphere for shared learning and growth.
We continued our long-standing collaboration with TechnipFMC, delivering another round of supervisory development training. Sessions were well-attended, with great energy and feedback. Thanks to the TechnipFMC team for their ongoing commitment to people development.
A fun and energetic team-building day with AquaTerra Training and Bon Accord at AquaTerra’s Kintore centre. It was packed with challenges, laughs, and friendly competition – a brilliant way to connect and recharge!

This month, we delivered mentoring training at Sulzer, a global leader in critical applications for essential industries. The session introduced the core principles of coaching and mentoring, explored the mentor’s role within Sulzer, and outlined the stages of a successful mentoring process. We also looked at key tools to support mentoring conversations and focused on building confidence in the role. A valuable session aimed at strengthening internal support and leadership.
We’ve just received some fantastic photos from Carlos showing the U.Supervise (Field) course being delivered in Spanish for Fugro in Chile – marking the third language we have supported for this global leadership development programme. Helping supervisors excel in their roles is a priority for organisations worldwide. Polaris Learning is proud to support Fugro’s vision by delivering U.Supervise across the globe – including the UK, Netherlands, Brazil, India, Singapore, Australia, USA, UAE, Egypt… and now Chile! The U.Supervise (Field) programme is built around the Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI) profile, helping field supervisors and team leads strengthen self-awareness, build better working relationships, and grow as leaders.

We’ve teamed up with Opportunity North East to deliver the leadership element of the Supervisory Skills Programme for the North East seafish industry. It’s been a pleasure working with such a motivated group of supervisors and managers.
Helena supported Team GB at the World Butchers’ Challenge in Paris. She was supporting their efforts across categories such as butchery technique, product innovation, and display. A brilliant showcase of global talent and craftsmanship!

Testimonial of the Month

"Training was very engaging, and kept everyone alert by moving the focus. Content was clearly explained and the real-world examples and experience assisted extremely well in the course."

A Learner,

Leadership Development

This feedback highlights the core strengths that set us apart:

1. Engagement and Attention Management

This shows that the training was interactive and dynamic, preventing monotony. By regularly shifting focus, the facilitator sustained participants’ attention – a key strategy in adult learning theory, which suggests that engagement increases when content delivery is varied and participatory.

2. Clear Communication of Content

Clarity in explanation ensures that complex topics are understood by all attendees, regardless of background. This highlights strong instructional design and delivery skills, ensuring that learning objectives are met effectively.

3. Relevance Through Real-World Experience

Incorporating real-world examples bridges the gap between theory and practice. This not only reinforces understanding but also makes the learning relevant and relatable, increasing its practical value to attendees.

4. Experience-Led Credibility

The reference to the facilitator’s own experience suggests the course was led by someone with genuine industry insight. Learners are more likely to trust and absorb information from someone who has “been there and done that.”

Why This Matters

This feedback reflects a training session that is thoughtfully designed, well-delivered, and rooted in practical relevance. These are core principles of impactful adult education – keeping learners engaged, making complex ideas easy to grasp, and ensuring applicability in the real world.

Research Insights

Organisations today are recognising that developing leadership capabilities early in an employee’s career is not just a learning initiative but a strategic business investment. By focusing on high-potential employees and early-career managers, companies aim to groom future leaders long before they assume senior roles. This proactive approach is driven by a growing consensus that strong leadership at all levels directly supports business goals – in fact, 86% of companies cite developing new leaders as an urgent priority (Deloitte, 2023). The following discussion examines why early investment in leadership skills yields dividends in organisational performance, return on investment, talent retention, and the future readiness of leadership pipelines.
Early leadership development has a clear impact on organisational performance. Research shows that high-quality leadership is closely correlated with stronger business results. For example, McKinsey finds that organisations with top-quartile leadership quality have nearly double the EBITDA of their peers (McKinsey, 2022). Similarly, analysis in Harvard Business Review suggests that effective leadership can account for up to 30% of a company’s bottom-line profitability (Harvard Business Review, 2020). By instilling leadership skills in rising talent early, companies can amplify these positive effects – better decision-making, innovation, and team alignment – which ultimately translate into superior financial performance and competitive advantage.
There is also a compelling return on investment (ROI) case for nurturing leaders early. Global corporations already spend over $60 billion annually on leadership development programmes (Harvard Business Review, 2023), reflecting an expectation of substantial returns. Studies indicate this investment is paying off: one recent report found an average return of about $7 for every $1 spent on leadership coaching and training – a 700% ROI (BetterManager, 2023). In practice, these gains come from improved sales, productivity and cost savings through better leadership practices. Indeed, McKinsey reports that companies which prioritise leadership development are over twice as likely to outperform their peers financially (McKinsey, 2024). Such data-driven evidence reassures HR and L&D leaders that money directed toward early leadership growth yields measurable business value in both the short and long term.
Beyond performance and finances, investing early in leadership skills drives higher engagement and retention of high-potential talent. Ambitious employees are more likely to stay and excel when they see growth opportunities. A study in Harvard Business Review found that firms with excellent leadership development have 37% higher employee retention than those with inadequate programs (Harvard Business Review, 2018). Likewise, a Deloitte survey reported that employees receiving robust leadership training are 50% more engaged in their roles (Deloitte, 2018). This matters because engaged employees tend to be more loyal and productive. By cultivating their future leaders, organisations send a clear message that they value and invest in their people’s growth. The payoff is lower turnover among top performers and a stronger internal talent pool – avoiding the high costs of losing high-potentials and having to recruit or promote externally.
Finally, early leadership development is crucial for future-proofing talent pipelines in the face of demographic and market changes. With many senior leaders approaching retirement and the business environment evolving rapidly, companies that fail to build a pipeline of ready leaders risk facing leadership voids. It is telling that most executives feel unprepared to meet future leadership needs, and only about 11% of companies currently report having a strong bench of capable leaders to fill key positions (DDI, 2021). Preparing new leaders early can close this gap. Equipping high-potentials with leadership experience and mentoring now ensures they can step seamlessly into bigger roles when needed. It also positions the organisation to handle new challenges: the World Economic Forum projects that “leadership and social influence” will be among the most in-demand skills in coming years (World Economic Forum, 2023). By future-proofing the leadership pipeline through early development, companies build agility and resilience — they will have the right leaders with the right skills ready to navigate whatever the future brings.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the case for early investment in leadership skills is strongly supported by both data and business outcomes. Developing high-potential employees into leaders at the start of their careers drives better organisational performance, delivers a solid ROI, and boosts engagement while safeguarding the company’s future leadership supply. The evidence from global studies makes it clear that this is not just an HR initiative but a prudent long-term strategy. Organisations that act now to cultivate their next generation of leaders will be rewarded with a pipeline of capable, committed leaders who can sustain and elevate the company’s success in the years ahead.
