What We Have Been Up To

Celebrating Apprenticeship Success
We're delighted to share some fantastic achievements this month! Congratulations to Ross from Compass on successfully completing his Modern Apprenticeship. Ross consistently delivered exceptional work and has been a valuable mentor, helping his colleagues through their own apprenticeships. Great work, Ross!
Special congratulations also to Kyle Ramsey from Sofina Foods for achieving his Level 3 qualification certificate. Balancing work, studies, and family commitments is never easy, but Kyle's dedication and perseverance have truly paid off. Well done, Kyle!
April was another busy month for leadership development:
We returned to TechnipFMC, delivering an engaging workshop focused on effective communication. Delegates explored the importance of pace, structure, and two-way interactions, providing excellent feedback and insights from the session.
We completed another successful Leadership Development Programme with Fugro in the Netherlands. Over three intensive days, emerging leaders explored personal leadership styles, building confidence, managing conflict, and aligning actions with company strategy. Thanks to Fugro for your collaboration and hospitality, and to all participants for your active engagement!
Another vibrant session took place with the Sulmara team, highlighting effective leadership amid real-world pressures and performance expectations. This group's openness and energy made for impactful discussions and meaningful takeaways. Thanks to everyone involved for your enthusiastic participation!
We're also thrilled to kick off Year 2 of the Leadership Development Programme with Gordon & MacPhail, starting with sessions focused on self-awareness, reflection, and resilience. It's always a pleasure working with such a motivated team!
Global Training Impact
Our training initiatives continue to go global! Laura travelled to Houston earlier this month to deliver our popular two-day Train the Trainer programme with UTEC Survey, helping develop confident trainers skilled in presentation and on-the-job training.
Northern Star Business Awards
AquaTerra Training were shortlisted for Inspiring Futures at the above event. We took a table on Friday 25th April at P&J Live and had a great evening. Attending the event at the AquaTerra Training table were Charlie, his wife Karen, Pete and Lesley, Joe, Paul, Claire, Grace, Keith and Iain. The award was for the work that we do with youngsters from various schools – Kemnay Academy, Inverurie Academy and Old Meldrum Academy. We have accepted students for a number of years, and they attend for a day of Working at Height and Confined Space training which they all seem to love. In fact, there is now a waiting list at some of the schools to come here! Although we did not win, we are very proud of what we have achieved and the difference that this makes to the young people.
Foundation Apprentice Success
In October 2024, AquaTerra Training offered a 6-month placement for a student to come and work with us. This is through the schools, Aberdeenshire Council and Quest. Matthew Wilson from Kemnay Academy spend 6 months with us, learning how to manage tasks, apply himself for project work, attended practical training and immersed himself into our team. He submitted paperwork and this goes towards his final exams. Matthew was a delight to have and fitted in so well. The whole team liked Matthew. He left 2 weeks ago and managed to pass his driving test the day before he finished at AquaTerra. He drove himself to AquaTerra on his last day and we are all proud of his achievement. He has successfully passed and we wish him all the very best of luck when he goes to university to study engineering.
Training Milestones
Congratulations to Grace, who successfully completed a 4-week online Excel training course—excellent work!
Standby Team Success
AquaTerra Training were awarded a 5-week contract for a 2-man standby team in Perth. This means the instructors are required to respond and reach any victim quickly should an incident occur. They have breathing apparatus, winches and rescue equipment with them at all times. If required, one of the rescue team will enter the confined space, retrieve the casualty while the other instructor pulls them both to safety.
Helix Vessel Training Onboard GCIII
Dale has been training on the vessel since 5th April and was back home on the 30th April. He has carried out Working at Height and Rescue Training onboard and had fantastic feedback from the client, via the OM. Our thanks to Dale for going above and beyond and representing AquaTerra so well. Being away from family for a long period of time is not easy and our thanks to all our instructors who do this. We appreciate you!
Busy Month Across Scotland
Our instructors have had a busy month, travelling extensively across Scotland—including two trips to Shetland (by ferry and plane!), as well as training sessions across Strathclyde, Moray, Angus, Fife, Aberdeen City, and Aberdeenshire. Courses delivered covered a diverse range, including: Pallet Truck, Counterbalance, Side Loader, Reach Truck, Telehandler, Multi Directional Truck, Pivot Steet, MEWP, Overhead Crane, Material Re-Handler, Slinger/Signaller, Dumper, Roller, Manual Handling and Abrasive Wheels.

Testimonials of the Month

Research Insights

This year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work was a timely reminder of the continued need for high-quality training and risk awareness across sectors such as energy, construction, logistics, and manufacturing. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 2023/24 saw 138 workplace fatalities in the UK – a figure that has remained stubbornly high, particularly in construction, which alone accounted for 51 deaths (HSE, 2025a). Non-fatal injuries remain prevalent too, with 604,000 workers reporting injuries, and 1.7 million suffering from work-related ill health (HSE, 2025b). These statistics reinforce the role that practical, competency-based training plays in managing workplace risk and protecting lives.
Confined space entry and rescue is another area of high concern. These environments – from tanks and culverts to utility vaults and vessels – present risks such as oxygen deficiency, toxic atmospheres, and entrapment. While incidents in confined spaces are relatively infrequent, they often result in multiple casualties due to poorly executed rescues. This is why employers in the energy and construction sectors increasingly rely on hands-on confined space training and standby rescue teams. Courses that combine gas monitoring, PPE, breathing apparatus, and simulated rescue drills significantly increase preparedness and reduce risk.
In logistics and heavy industry, operating equipment like forklifts, cranes, telehandlers, and MEWPs comes with its own risk profile. The HSE reports a persistent rate of serious injuries linked to machinery and load handling. Proper training on equipment operation, signalling, slinging, and safe load movement is vital. What matters most is that this training is delivered in-context, on the actual equipment used at the client’s site, and aligned with the relevant accreditations (such as NPORS or RTITB). From side loaders and reach trucks to excavators and dumpers, ensuring operators, supervisors, and managers have the right skills protects people and maintains site productivity.
Handling and transporting dangerous goods—whether by road, air, or sea—continues to pose significant safety and compliance challenges. In sectors like logistics, manufacturing, and offshore operations, incidents involving hazardous materials can have severe consequences for people, property, and the environment. Training in the classification, packaging, labelling, and emergency handling of dangerous goods is essential. With frequent updates to ADR and IATA regulations, keeping employees competent and confident in this area ensures both safety and legal compliance. For those working with radioactive materials or complex logistics chains, refresher courses and hands-on training remain vital tools for risk management.
Manual handling injuries remain one of the leading causes of workplace ill health, with 543,000 workers affected in 2023/24 – a 14% increase from the year before (HSE, 2025b). These issues disproportionately affect sectors with repetitive tasks, awkward loads, or limited mechanical aids. Manual handling training is essential. More than just ‘lifting with your legs’, effective training looks at workplace layout, task design, and team coordination to reduce physical strain. It’s this broader understanding that leads to lasting change.
Competency management systems are playing an increasingly central role in how organisations plan, track, and assure health and safety performance. Particularly in high-risk sectors like oil and gas, construction, and manufacturing, the ability to monitor workforce skills in real time is critical. These systems provide a structured approach to managing evidence of training, assessing skills, and identifying gaps across roles and departments. They help ensure that people are not just trained, but demonstrably competent in the tasks they are assigned. As regulatory expectations grow, competency management systems also support audit readiness and compliance – giving organisations confidence that their people are equipped, qualified, and ready to work safely.
In all sectors, leadership sets the tone for workplace safety. The HSE has consistently emphasised that the majority of workplace accidents could be prevented through better planning, supervision, and communication (HSE, 2025a). This is where leadership development programmes come in – giving supervisors and managers the tools to identify risks, support their teams, and embed a culture of shared responsibility. Courses that explore communication styles, behavioural safety, conflict resolution, and decision-making under pressure are not just relevant, but essential.
Conclusion
As we move through 2025, the need for practical, effective health and safety training has never been clearer. Whether it’s training in working at height, confined space entry, lifting operations, dangerous goods handling, or safety leadership, the focus must remain on competency – not just awareness. The latest statistics are a sobering reminder that risks are real, consequences are serious, and quality training is one of the best tools we have to protect lives.
